SHIVA AND SHIVA LINGA

                   WHY WE WORSHIP SHIVA?
** These texts are originally from The book named  Kundalini, The Mother of the Universe, by Rishi Singh Gherwal, [1930]      (This old book is available @ google in other languages and edition )
This book is Almost 85 years old. I got a peace of old newspaper and while  reading this  i realized that i should share these true facts and information with some readers who believe in Hinduism and specially who are devoted to LORD Shiva AKA Mahadev. The name of newspaper is A.B patrika ,
Amrita Bazar Patrika was one of the oldest newspapers in India; it was launched in Bengali.[1] It debuted on 20 February 1868. It was started by Sisir Ghosh and Moti Lal Ghosh, sons of Hari Naryan Ghosh, a rich merchant from Magura, in District Jessore, in Bengal Province of British Empire in India. The family had constructed a Bazar and named it after Amritamoyee, wife of Hari Naryan Ghosh. Sisir Ghosh and Moti Lal Ghosh started Amrita Bazar Patrika as a weekly first. It was first edited by Moti Lal Ghosh, who did not have formal University Degree. The paper was popular for its honest reporting and caustic reporting. It had built its readership as a rival to Bengalee which was being looked after by Surendera Nath Banerjee.[2] It was an English daily newspaper published from Kolkata and other locations such as Cuttack, Ranchi and Allahabad.[3]
*i wrote this because if anyone feels that there not a newspaper as such or no informition as such can crosscheck on Wikipedia about it and if you are able to get the page i have of march 20,1930  then you can read it there as well.

So, why we worship shiva ?

From time immemorial the Hindus are worshipping God Siva who is master of truth, beauty and bliss. From the highest Himalayas on the north down to Rameswar in the south and from Chandranath hill on the east to Dwarka on the west the whole of India is filled up with Siva-temples here and there. So it is quite needless to give any acquaintance of God Siva to the Indians whom they are ever-familiar with. Their ins and outs are ever-filled up with the attributes of Siva and hearts ever spring with joy in His very worship! This Siva-worship is not only an object of outward form of Hindu-worship, but the Greatest Saint Acharya Sankara who perfectly realised within himself the true meaning of Indian worship of God Siva, declared quite clearly in one of the hymns called "Nirvana Shatkam" as follows:—"I am beyond all imaginations and forms, I do not obey any sense but all senses obey Me; there is nothing without Me, I am Siva Himself in the very Shape of Soul and Joy. This is the real description of Siva, the worshippers who proceed in their way with this true acquaintance of the worshipped are surely blessed. His worship required no particular arrangement,—He is ever satisfied with two little prayers and offerings,—a drop of water, a leaf of bel and cheek-slap sounds only please Him the most. We have no second thing to offer to Him, the Atman or Soul is the only object of His offer. In His well-known hymn of salutation we find the following expression:—'We bow Thee down O God, full of infinite welfare and calmness and the root cause of all the three worlds. I offer my soul unto Thee. Thou God of gods and Goal of all." Surrendering of the Self is His only mode of worship, which transform an earthly being to Divine being full of heavenly bliss. Hence a blessed holy person sing most loudly the highly esteemed song "Am Siva Himself am Siva Himself in the very shape of Soul and Joy!"

TRUE SIGNIFICANCE

Siva worship does not require the exact image of Siva as depicted in the hymn of Holy Scripture, but it prefers a bright symbol of Divinity widely known as "Siva-Lingam"!
p. 139
[paragraph continues] What is Lingam? We must think deeply and make out its real explanation. Lingam means sign or symbol. Worship of Such Divine Symbol is a current usage amongst all nations of the world. The Hindus worship Lingam, the Bouddhas, Stupa, the Mahomedans, a Blue Stone Pulpit in Kaba and the Christians a Cross Staff; thus almost every great nation worships a Divine symbol of whatever shape it may be. The modern historians are of opinion that the Buddhistic Stupa or Pagoda was transformed into Siva Lingam by mighty influence of Acharya Sankara. But actually the worship of Siva Lingam is being practised by the Hindus from unknown pre-historic time. We find the origin of its history in the last chapter of 'Dharma Samhita' of 'Siva Maha Puranam' that when the world was totally destroyed and there was nothing but unending flood of water and three original representations of Godhood namely Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra, Brahma and Vishnu requested Rudra most fervently for recreation of the universe. Rudra gladly consented and immersed Himself in a long deep meditation. Some thousand years being passed in this way and
p. 140
finding no possibility of creation by Him, Vishnu asked Brahma to perform the task, who finished it instantly. Rudra then rose from the meditation and finding everything already created by Brahma, because fired with wrath and at once attempted to destroy. At this Brahma and Vishnu came before Him and extinguished His wrath by entreaties, and singing long prayer ire His praise. Easily pleased He was gladdened instantly with that and with the request of Brahma and others, He threw off His fiery vigour produced through wrath unto the Sun, who got the splendid illumination to light up the world. The Divine Vigour of God Siva, placed thus in the Sun is worshipped thrice a day by all as Gavatri, Savitri and Saraswati. Thereafter Siva who secured endless life seeds for the creation through long meditation, put off the Lingam or Symbol which is the stock of life-seeds and threw it down on the earth. Thus being thrown off it began to expand both downward and upward and made unbearable horror to the world. Vishnu went downward and Brahma upward to get two ends of the same but being utterly unsuccessful were staying quite unhappy. At this
p. 141
moment some words were heard to be uttered in the Ethereal plane that "If this blazing Symbol of Divine vigour be worshipped by all it would be pleased and the horrible temper would be transformed into broad calmness to the entire welfare of the world. By worshipping the Symbol all would worship God Siva. Thereupon all did the same whole-heartedly and happiness of the world was restored for ever and the worshipers were filled up with the spirit of Divinity and fully realized within themselves the perfect Godhood of Siva.

THREE DIVINE FORMS

From the very time of this well-known fact about the origin of Effulgent and Eternal Lingam or Symbol, the Hindus have been worshiping God Siva in Pure and Divine Symbol. Siva is not only the lord of destruction, a description in the 'Sivastakam' composed by Acharya Sankara gives out the perfectness of God Siva in three Divine forms for three divisions of work, namely Brahma as Creator, Vishnu as Supporter and Rudra as Destroyer. His symbol is ever-embraced by the Symbol of Nature, the World Mother. Here lies a very high idea of Hindu system of worship which express
p. 142
as clear as daylight the true meaning of worshiping Fatherhood and Motherhood of God symbolized together. Everyone being the child of Father God(rudra) and Mother Nature(devi) possesses full right to worship what symbolize Them both. Is it not? Yes, actually this is the universal system of worship not at all confined in any country, community or sect. This is quite natural just as a child pays its due respect to the father and mother.
In other words it is the worship of Self or Atman and the realization of Godhood within the worshipper himself. The spinal column standing on the plexus which is triangular in form is the symbol of that worship. From the plexus right up comes the hollow canal called Susumna or Antarasunya and from the left and the right sides come two fine nerves known as Ida and Pingala coiled round this hollow canal or the spinal column forming vertebra. These are the upper end or terminus of the hollow canal wherein to be found a mesh work of fine nerve tissues which is on the central part of the brain, otherwise called cerebellum apart from cerebrum and medulla oblongata. In mythological language this mesh or network of tissues is called the
p. 143
thousand petalled lotus or Sahasrar.
This is what we find in physiological structures. Inside the hollow canal known as Susumna three concentric nerve tissues equally hollow inside are also mentioned in the book. The first or the outer one is called Vazra-naree or Indra-naree. The second one inside the first casing is called Surya-naree or Solar canal and still further inside another hollow canal mentioned is known as Brahmanaree or the hollow canal for Divinity.

SYMBOLIC DRIFT

This whole physiological representation is symbolized in stone image known as Sthanu and Gauripatta. The worshiper is to unloosen a bit of clog or small globule on the top of the Sthanu and then the worship will begin, because it is supposed that the internal passage to the higher plane is naturally blocked up which must be removed, so that the internal flow or the passage of energy might come up to the highest plane known as Sahasrar. To put in Psychological language the Atman or the Ego which is supposed to be inside the hollow canal or Susumna of the person is to be worshipped or meditated upon. From
p. 144
the down plexus six stages are mentioned as lotuses. These lotuses and stages are to be traversed by rigid meditation upon one's own Self and the adjoining nerve tissues of the centre are called particular lotuses. We have Muludhara, Swadhisthana, Manipura; Bisuddha Chakra, Anahata, Ajna Chakra and Sahasrar. Thus worshipping these representations one is worshipping his Ownself or Ego. Hence no rigid ritualities are ordained neither any caste distinction nor speciality of persons are required. Every person can worship Siva quite independently. It is the most non-sectarian, non-bigoted form of worship. This worship is the worthy self projection or super-imposition of one's own Self or Adhyas of the Atman as symbolized in some material casing or stone representation.
Now in the Bamachari period when everything was explained out through the symbol of creative agencies known as Brahma-Vija and Sristhi Vija, the vertebra or the Sthanu is called the male symbol or Phallus of creation and the plexus or Gouripatta is called the female symbol or Phallus of production. Thus the creative aspect of the original idea is well-preserved in the
p. 145
representation which form an alter mode of explanation. The Sthanu is the representation of the Eternal column or Image known as Jyotirmoy or Effulgent Image and the Gouripatta is represented receptivity of the Divine Energy which brings forth the creation. In Common parlance it is called Firmament and Earth or Creative Father and Mother in procreation.

"Linga" simply means "sign". (it doesn’t means penis of lord and if it is penis then we cannot call a linga it should be shishna)
So, Shiva Linga is definitely means a sign of God.
Actually Hindus had a culture of personification of every thing. They gave many signs and symbols to One God. Hinduism is basically monotheist religion.
But various signs and symbols are mistaken by people as different individual entities and people forget the concept of God. This is the deviation associated with various symbols which causes confusion and insult to God. Now people say rubbish for Siva Linga sign of God. Who can stop them ???
That is why, in Quran the personification of God in form of images or symbols is strictly prohibited.
Shiva aspect stands for atomic consciousness, that permeates all creation, and in the heart of all beings. Shakti stands for the inert prakriti or nature. A union of this consciousness and inert nature gives birth to all creation including the physical and mental worlds, our maaya, awareness and bliss. This union of consciousness and nature aspects is "symbolized" (remember linga means a symbol too) by two concentric circles depicting these two aspects of Divinity, conjoined in a geometric egg like shape, in one continuous harmony of unity. Shiv linga is also spoken of as the cosmic seed of creation.

Let me also add, that it may also be, - but is rendered irrelevant due to today's moral prejudices- that in the past the same creativity was also seen to be symbolized in the act of conjugation. But this symbolism today carries unnecessary negative moral baggage, that has been unfortunately much polluted by cultures that couldnt see sex as more than an act of pleasure and women as more than objects of use for sensual pleasure and progeny. Such male dominated cultures installed traditions to inhibit women, put veils on them, instead of attempting to correct their own mental and sensual pollution. Vedic researchers in ancient times,, instead -focused on spiritual research with much work on internal self control of thoughts, instincts and impulses, while placing woman at the highest point of respect. Sex was as holy an act as any other natural acts that exists in creation. Why should there be a and bad in a natural act? ( Do we see process of multiplication of amoeba as immoral, and some of its parts more sacred than other?) The trouble truly lies in our own prejudices and outlook.

In this light, symbolism of lingam and yoni that you critique, too may have equally sacred foundations. But like I said, today's moral biases turn this symbolism as irrelevant to the objective of depicting creation with highest holiness.

Brother, you will never be able to convince all of the purity at the heart of these depictions. Spirituality is best exercised individually. Ignore, the ignorance, till someone asks for assistance in humility.

Om namah shivaya
Har har mahadev.

MYSTERY OF SPIRITS

WHAT IS SOUL OR WHAT IS SPIRIT ?

Introduction

Spirit is described in the second  chapter of The Holy Gita.Universe, is composed of the union of soul and nature. soul is omnipresent, constant, unborn, latent and without disorder, but nature have variables and disorders in it . whatever the changes we see in the world are only the changes happening in the nature not in the spirit. Yes, this change is based on the spirit . there are five elements of nature:earth, water, fire, air, ether.

These five elements are present in everything in the world. changes in the nature occurs due to these five elements and three gunas i.e. Sattva , Raja , Tama. Gita said that the weapons can not cut the soul, then the disconnecting is in the earth element, the element of fire is burning, melting and drying of the water element and air element . these features are four elements and the fifth element is AKASHA (ether) i.e. the empty space. the four elements work on the basis of ether element . a spirit is beyond the five elements. so cuts, burns , rot and drying these all are possible only in the body and other objects made up of five elements, not in spirit. Science is the study of five elements, but the spirituality is the process of  experience of spiritual self element, so where science end , spirituality begins from there.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE SOUL LEAVES THE BODY ?

Garuda purana says that when the soul leaves the body , 2 prophets(doot) of god of death (yama) comes. how will they take us it depends on what kind of karmas we did in life. if the person is gentle, pious soul , it does not get any pain but immoral or sinful souls of people has to suffer the pain. They, the yamdootas takes the pious soul with respect and scoundrel and immoral souls are mistreated and punished. Garuda Purana also mentioned that the yamdoota's only takes the soul for 24 hours.

These 24 hours are taken in events of  his entire life. he has shown that he has done how many sins and virtuous. then the soul is left in the same house where his body was discarded. it remains there until the 13-day (uttarkaryas) (tehrvi) response actions. 13 days later he travels to Yamaloka.

             MOVEMENTS (GATI)  OF THE SOUL

According to the Vedas, the Upnishads, the garuda purana . after death there are 8 types of conditions of soul. which is also called (GATI) movement or motion . it is basically divided into two parts, the AGATI and GATI. in AGATI(akinesis) the soul cannot get enlightenment ( moksha) . again it has to go and take birth on a loka.
I've described the loka's in my previous posts. so for better understanding read them also.
There are four type of AGATI (akinesis) -
   1. Kshinodrk
   2. Bhumodrk
   3. Trutiya agati
   4. chaturth agati

in kshinodrk agati the organism(jeevatma) again comes in face of a  pious-soul in the death world (mrityuloka- in which we are living) and lives the life like a saint.. In bhumodrk the soul again takes birth and lives a luxurious life . in trutiya agati he will spend life or born as a animal. and in chaturth agati the soul again  takes birth but as  insect, pests.  There are 4 lokas given Under the gati (motion) and a soul goes to them and allotted a place in four lokas according  to their deed,karmas.. the four lokas under gati is listed below-
1.Brahmaloka
2.Devaloka(heaven)
3.Pitriloka
4.Narakloka

                                                              SPIRIT PATH

In mythology i.e. The Puranas, the three routes are considered for the journey of soul. when a man dies and soul leaves the body and after the 13th day of death the journey begins. according to his deeds one route/way to travel is allotted to the soul.

These three routes are-
1.archi marg (archi route)
2. dhoom marg (sputter route)
3. uttpatti-vinash marg (creation-destruction route)

Archi  route ( marg) is for traveling to brahmloka and devaloka(heaven). dhoommarg is to visit pitriloka, and creation and destruction route (utpatti-vinash marg) is to travell to hell.

                                          KINDS OF HELL
There are 36 main hell. also the avichi , kumbhipaak , maharourv are three main (mukhyatam) .
these three narakas are located in central side and udhrav of the hell.
these 36 narkas have further 4-4 subhells (up-narak)

                                        EXISTENCE OF THE SOUL

I am not only the body, i am the soul which is the part of divine/parmatma. god is not hindu, not muslim, not sikh and not christian neither jewish(yahudi). god is the super-energy which is the reason for all the creation , root of conscious, and invisible-visible.. i am a part ,a fraction of that divine(THE GOD). For better understanding we can take an example - like , due to heavy cloudy weather we cannot se the beauty of mountains, similarly due to this big cloud of ignorance we cannot see the reality behind it.

spirit is a life-force which is the force of our body.it is strength, not a person.without this life force we are cannot live or we can say we are dead and dust again. when the body is released from the soul or life force, the body dies and returns to where it came from- the earth. similarly, the life-force i.e. the soul returns to where he had come to existence i.e. To Parmatma(GOD).

WHO BECOMES THE 'BHOOT', EVIL SPIRIT

Which don't have a present, only have past is called ghost or bhoot. ghost soul becomes stuck in the past. life is not in the past and also not in the future, it is always in the present. who resides in present he steps towards The Liberation.

SPIRITS,SOULS ARE OF THREE CONSIDERED FORMS

        1. Jeevatma , 2. Pretatma , 3. sukshmatma .
which dwells in the physical body is called Jeevatma.when the individual soul(Jeevatma) resides or enter in the boy of  desires and fantasy's then it is called a ghot or pretatma. and when the soul enters the subtle body then it is caleed a sukshmatma.

bhoot, pret, spirits has tremendous speed and power. They are of diffrent species and the are known as bhhot , pret, rakashas, pishach, yam, shakini, dayan, dakini, chudail, gandharv etc.

                                           TYPES OF EVIL SPIRITS

In Hinduism division of dead people is done according to their action(Karma) and speed (Gati)-Bhoot(ghost), pret(ghost, phantom), pishach( Vampire),kushmanda, brahmrakshas, vetal(sprite), kshetrapal(yeoman). All these also have their sub-parts . According to Ayurveda there are 18 types of Pret. Ghost is the initial term or even an ordinary persom dies, He becomes ghost first .

similarly, when a women dies, she is known by different names. when a procreative lady or a young women dies becomes Chudail (witch) and when a virgin girl dies she is known as devi, a women who had done wrong deeds and sins becomes dayan or dakini. These all are created because of their sins, lechery or the absence of  shradh (memorial) or premature death (Akaal mrityu).

There are 84,00,000 species(Yoni) , The spirits that live in the Pashuyoni(animals), pakshiyoni(birds), manushyayoni(human) Moves or goes into invisible Bhoot-pret yoni. at each birth the spirit (atma) attains a living being form , which is called Yoni .and there  84,00,000 yoni's like this, which includes all insects-moths, animals, birds, trees and humans etc.

Spirits which goes in pretyoni becomes invisible and powerful. but all deads or spirits does not goes to this yoni, all dead people are invisible but they all are not powerful.it depends on the karma and gati of the spirit. many spirits goes to these pretyoni's  and again take birth as a human.

In pitra paksha we Hindus do libation of our Pitras.(ancestor soul) . this proves the existence of ancestors in the form of bhoot-pret.  Garuda Purana gives a detailed description about the ghosts. shrimad bhagwat purana describes the scenario of dhundkari becoming a Pret.

                      THE UNQUENCHABLE(unsatisfied) SPIRITS BECOMES GHOST

A person who is having wishes and feelings like hunger, thirst, sexual desires, anger, malice, greed, lust etc at the time of death , surely becomes a ghost . And the person who died because of  an accident, murder, suicide etc, also becomes a ghost and wanders . For satisfy the soul  of these kinds shradh and tarpan (memorial and libation) is done. People who do not do so for their family and pitras are often disturbed by these spirits.

                                                  AIR NAMED YAMA

According to the vedas in mritukal i.e. at the time of death  the souls remains stable in a kind of air called Yama  for some time and again that souls enters a womb and takes birth . when a spirit or soul enters a womb it is in a deep sleep state (sushupti avastha) . It remains in this state even before the birth ,  Only The more memory-full and meditative spirits  can know that they are dead  and only these can become ghost or bhoot.

Just like the way a spirit or a soul goes from (sushupti) deep sleep state to (swapn) dream state and from dream state to (Jagrati) Awakened state , similarly At the time of death (in mrityukal) it goes from awakened(jagrat awastha) to dream and from dream to deep sleep (sushupti) anf from sushupti  to (Gahan sushupti) a very deep sleep state . and like this the cycle of life and death continues.

                                            FEELING OF  GHOST SPIRITS

They have a strong desire to eat , they seems even more thirsty , but cannot get satisfied. They are very sad and irritated , They wanders sometimes in the house and sometimes in the forest , they are always and every time in search of liberation provider (mukti pradata).

                                        CONDITION OF GHOST SPIRITS

Much noise, Light and mantra chants are not liked by the ghosts . that's why they remain in distance with these. and they like krishna paksha more and on teras and chaudas and amavasya the are in strong position and active . ghosts are often visible in those places and locations which was related to them in their lifetime or places which are secluded. A long time vacant house or bunglow is also the abode of ghosts.

STRENGTH AND POWER OF GHOST SPIRITS

Ghosts are invisible.their body is made up of air . i.e. they are body less. it is known as (sukshma sharir) subtle body. according to Ayurveda, it is composed of 17 elements . some spirits/ghosts  understands the power and strength of their sublte body and they also knows how to use it, and some spirits knows nothing.

some ghosts spirits have the power of touch (sparsh) and some ghosts do not have . which spirit is having the power to touch , they could throw great trees out from the soil.. if these kinds of spirits becomes bad then they are very dangerous . spirits can also give feel of their presence to any person around them  .

These kind of ghost spirits are having so much mental power that they can turn and can change anybody's mind and brain  for any good or bad work. and they also knows that how to use anyone's physical body.

Due to lack of solidity ghost spirit had no effect on them of sward or bullet or sticks etc. Ghosts have the ability to experience the joys and sorrows , because in outer sense ether and air  and in inner sense mind, conscious, intellect is anesthesia (Sangyashunya) so they can only experience the joys and sorrows.

                                         GOOD AND EVIL SPIRITS

Good and bad sense of sensuality to the deceased is considered good and bad. Where good souls of deceased goes is called pitriloka and where the evil souls of deceased goes that is known as pretloka .

Good and bad spirits of nature seeks a person who can meet or fulfill their desires. evil spirits seeks those persons who are indulge in criminal activities , impious, sinful, and who life for the satisfaction of senses (Indriyan). then the spirits fulfill their desires according to the persons nature, karma, properties / characteristics.
According to the mentality, instincts, nature, sins and holiness of a person a soul enters in the body accordingly . most of the people would not have known it. good spirits satisfies themselves  by doing good deed . it results in the good deeds of the person in who's body the spirit is residing. it benefits him also and bad or evil spirits satisfies themselves by doing bad deeds and they also inspire the person to do bad deeds/karmas. That's why according to the Hinduism among good deeds and righteousness, it is necessary for a person to have devotion towards God. then only one can be safe from both kind of spirits.

                                       WHO BECOMES A GHOST HUNT

According to the laws and rules of the religion , people who do not believe in holiness(pavitrata), who insults the god , guru(Teacher), devas and who always indulged in sinful activities . Most of the time these kind of people can come easily into the clutches of ghosts.

Some of these people would not now that Any ghost is ruling on them, people whose mental strength is very week Ghosts are able to rule directly on them. Those who work at night and who are sinful ,evil can become a ghost hunt easily . according to hindu dharm any kind of religious auspicious work is not done in night. and those who do these kind of works at night are surly of bhoota(ghosta), vampires(pishach), rakshasha(demon) and pretyoni.
